Stacked JWST/NIRSpec UV Spectrum Reveals Ionization and Stellar Outflows in 104 Galaxies at z ~ 6.5

What Was Observed (Empirical Data)
Researchers stacked rest-frame ultraviolet spectra (1200 to 2000 Angstroms) from 104 [O III]-emitting galaxies at redshifts between 5.7 and 6.9 (mean z = 6.50) using JWST/NIRSpec. The composite spectrum exhibits narrow high-ionization emission lines (O III], C III], He II) and multiple interstellar absorption lines blueshifted by approximately 200 km/s, alongside redshifted Lyman-alpha emission.
The Reality Check (Anti-Hype Analysis)
These measurements reflect average properties across a stacked composite of 104 galaxies rather than resolved spectra of individual systems, and while narrow emission widths disfavor broad-line active galactic nuclei, a narrow-line nuclear contribution cannot be completely ruled out. Furthermore, kinematic modeling indicates that outflows at ~200 km/s in such young galaxies can only propagate 3 to 9 proper kiloparsecs, meaning this specific galaxy population alone cannot account for widespread intergalactic medium metal enrichment at z ~ 6.5.
