Science Case Overview Proposed for the ELT-SHARP Near-Infrared Spectrograph

What Was Observed (Empirical Data)
This paper outlines proposed science cases rather than new empirical observations, detailing the technical specifications of SHARP, a planned multi-mode near-infrared spectrograph (0.95 to 2.45 micrometers) for Extremely Large Telescopes. The instrument incorporates NEXUS, an adaptive-optics multi-object spectroscopy mode covering a 1.2 by 1.2 arcminute field at spectral resolutions up to R ~ 17,000, alongside VESPER, a multi-integral-field-unit mode designed to resolve crowded, dust-obscured stellar environments in the Milky Way and Local Group.
The Reality Check (Anti-Hype Analysis)
No new astronomical measurements, detections, or empirical tests of the Lambda-CDM cosmological model are presented in this preprint. It is a planning document defining how a future instrument could complement existing and upcoming surveys such as Gaia, LSST, and 4MOST once constructed.
