TNG50 Simulations Map Neutral Hydrogen Absorption Boundaries Scaled by Halo Virial Radii at Redshift 3

What Was Observed (Empirical Data)
Researchers modeled neutral hydrogen absorption around halos at redshift z ~ 3 out to 50 virial radii using synthetic sightlines extracted from the TNG50 cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. The simulation shows a distinct spatial sequence where damped Ly-alpha absorbers give way to sub-damped systems at 0.11 virial radii, Lyman limit systems at 0.3 virial radii, and the diffuse Ly-alpha forest at 0.5 virial radii. This radial progression is nearly invariant when scaled to the halo virial radius across three orders of magnitude in halo mass.
The Reality Check (Anti-Hype Analysis)
This study is a theoretical investigation using numerical simulation data rather than direct empirical measurements from a physical telescope. The reported column densities and covering fractions depend on IllustrisTNG sub-grid modeling choices for baryonic feedback and radiative cooling, which may not fully reflect true circumgalactic turbulence or small-scale clumpiness. While calibrating these spatial profiles helps model nuisance parameters in cosmic large-scale structure surveys, it does not resolve all observational contamination and blending in real quasar spectra.
