Simulations Define Minimal Radial Velocity Requirements for Confirming Self-Lensing Compact Object Binaries

What Was Observed (Empirical Data)
Researchers simulated photometric light curves and targeted radial velocity (RV) observations of edge-on binary systems containing compact objects that gravitationally lens light from their stellar companions. By jointly fitting synthetic photometry and radial velocity data, the study quantified the median relative error in recovered lens mass, orbital period, and compact-object classification. They found that parameter accuracy depends primarily on the quantity rather than the precision of radial velocity measurements, except in the shortest-period systems.
The Reality Check (Anti-Hype Analysis)
This study is purely a theoretical and computational modeling exercise, not a new observational discovery of a black hole or neutron star binary. Currently, only five white dwarf self-lensing systems have been empirically confirmed, and zero self-lensing black hole or neutron star systems have been detected to date. Furthermore, while adding RV data improves classification between compact-object types, constraining the exact mass of the lensing object remains substantially more difficult.
