Rubin Observatory Early Coadds Reveal Activity in 32 Comets and 336 Near-Earth Objects

What Was Observed (Empirical Data)
Using NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory Early Data Preview 2 (EDP2) co-added images, researchers identified shallow single- and double-visit regions containing known small Solar System bodies via the Rubin Science Platform. From approximately 700 cutouts of active bodies, the team confirmed 59 activity detections across 32 objects, identifying previously unknown activity in 2025 NC6 and pre-perihelion activity in 2008 QZ44. The search also recovered 336 near-Earth object cutouts, including 29 objects exhibiting extended trails exceeding 25 pixels in length.
The Reality Check (Anti-Hype Analysis)
These detections rely on serendipitous shallow image regions with only one or two contributing visits rather than systematic time-domain observation. Co-addition naturally blurs and dilutes fast-moving bodies, meaning non-detections in these frames do not imply an absence of objects or lack of true physical activity. The workflow functions as an interim data-mining technique ahead of the full Data Preview 2 release in late 2026, not an operational planetary defense alert or discovery of collision threats.
