Resolved ALMA and X-Ray Analysis Characterizes Intracluster Medium of Galaxy Cluster CL J0459.6-4946 at z=1.7

What Was Observed (Empirical Data)
Researchers combined deep ALMA Band 1 and Band 3 thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich observations with archival X-ray data to spatially resolve the intracluster medium of ACT/SPT-CL J0459.6-4946 at a redshift of 1.7. The analysis measured a hot core temperature of approximately 14 keV, a flat central entropy distribution near 200 keV cm^2 out to 0.3 r500, and a gas clumpiness factor of 1.17 +/- 0.05. X-ray data also revealed a dense, low-entropy feature south of the cluster center that does not appear in the Compton-y pressure map, indicating a structure in pressure equilibrium such as a sloshing front or stripped subcluster core.
The Reality Check (Anti-Hype Analysis)
While the central gas properties point to an actively assembling system still undergoing thermalization, the inferred hydrostatic mass bias of 0.27 (+0.32 / -0.67) relative to weak lensing carries large uncertainties and remains statistically consistent with zero. These findings represent a detailed case study of a single high-redshift massive cluster rather than a universal revision to cosmological cluster mass calibration.
