Proposed FOSSIL Space Mission Design Aims for High-Precision CMB Spectral Distortion Measurements

No empirical astronomical observations or physical detections were made in this study, which presents a conceptual design for a proposed space observatory. The FOSSIL instrument concept is designed with 130 spectral channels spanning 50 GHz to 2 THz to measure chemical-potential (mu) and Compton (y and relativistic y) CMB spectral distortions. The proposal outlines an architecture aimed at achieving monopole sensitivity approximately three orders of magnitude superior to the legacy COBE/FIRAS instrument.
