NASA Tests Autonomous Lunar Landing Navigation Payload on Terrestrial Drone
What Was Observed (Empirical Data)
On August 27, NASA conducted a terrestrial flight test using an Alta-X drone carrying the Safe and Precise Landing - Integrated Capabilities Evolution (SPLICE) guidance, navigation, and control payload. The test executed simulated lunar descent and landing maneuvers to evaluate autonomous hazard detection and site selection hardware.
The Reality Check (Anti-Hype Analysis)
This test was conducted in Earth's atmosphere aboard a quadcopter drone rather than on an actual spacecraft in a vacuum environment. While the sensor suite performed simulated maneuvers, the system has not yet been validated under actual lunar orbital velocities, thermal extremes, or rocket-powered descent conditions.
