NASA Selects Three Surface Payloads to Study Lunar Volatiles, Seismology, and Subsurface Structure
What Was Observed (Empirical Data)
No in situ measurements have been conducted yet. NASA selected three instrument suites under the PRISM initiative: the DISCO payload to measure volatile ice within micro cold traps, GIMLI to probe subsurface structures at Marius Hills Pit, and LEMS-SP to record South Pole seismicity and exospheric volatiles. Empirical data collection remains pending future delivery and deployment on the lunar surface via commercial landers.
The Reality Check (Anti-Hype Analysis)
This selection represents an early hardware development phase rather than the active construction of a habitable lunar base. Subsurface ice concentrations and candidate lava tube geometries remain unconfirmed until these payloads land and collect local ground truth data. Mission success also depends on the landing reliability and operational survival of commercial delivery vehicles.
