ALMA Millimeter Observations Constrain Wind Mass-Loss Rates in the Wolf-Rayet System Apep

What Was Observed (Empirical Data)
Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Bands 6 and 7 at an angular resolution of approximately 20 milliarcseconds, researchers detected point-like millimeter emission from the WN star, elongated emission likely tracing the colliding-wind region, and an associated O-type star at 0.7 arcseconds separation. Applying a canonical spherical wind model to the measured flux densities yields estimated mass-loss rates of approximately 2 × 10^-5 solar masses per year for the WN component and 10^-5 solar masses per year for the WC component.
The Reality Check (Anti-Hype Analysis)
Despite aiming to directly resolve both Wolf-Rayet components to confirm their indirectly inferred 47 milliarcsecond separation, the WC companion star was not directly detected in the observations. Furthermore, the derived mass-loss rates rely on simplified canonical spherical wind models rather than directly accounting for complex asymmetries or wind clumping in the colliding-wind environment.
